• Headstock of mandolin custom built by Craig Rantz.

(Prev: French Polish Back)

Here you’re looking at the headstock overlay on mandolin #1. Smaller surface areas can be difficult when applying a French polish – especially with an obstruction. In this case the nut was in the way of a smooth stroke across the headstock.

The only option I had was to wipe away from the nut. This worked, but took more TLC with the pumice stone to get the desired finish.

Fortunately, the tuners go on last and cover the finish. It would have been impossible to apply a French polish around the tuner bushings.
