Finished mandolin, string-up view, custom built by Craig Rantz.

(Prev: String Up)

Here is a sound sample of the finished mandolin.

The sound is rich on the wound strings and punchy on the treble side. I actually use this instrument for bluegrass and folk music. It seems to want to play both equally well.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the mandolin is how the back “works” the overall sound. If I hold the instrument against my torso and play, it is moderately loud, and the sound is a bit reserved. However, if I hold it out away from my abdomen, it’s twice as loud, and has no reservation barking its sound out toward the listeners!

If you are interested in purchasing a custom-built mandolin or ukulele, place an order to initiate a conversation. There is no obligation.
